He helped put that region and more specifically Bien Nacido Vineyard on the map, while also making age worthy wines from such reputable vineyards such as Hirsch and Olivet Lane from Sonoma. Drake grew up around his father and Burt Williams, absorbing their conversations and ideas about wine making. The message was clear, make wines the natural way. No pumps, no filters, no fining, no enzymes, no water, no acid, no color adjunct. Drake has continued this and now makes wines that garner attention from some of the most respected Somm’s in the world; and they can be found in some of the best restaurants in the world such as Eleven Madison Park, Le Bernardin, Melisse, and Providence, to name just a few. He has been featured on Master Sommelier and Start of the Somm Film Brian McClintics Viticole Wine Club, which currently has a waiting list. His wines are pure, vibrant, and totally terroir driven as he uses no new oak and does not “stylize” wine. In the land from which I stem, the climate is too cool to ripen this sun-loving beauty. And so began my search: northern Spain, southern France, southern Australia, California… Abundant sunshine and entrepreneurial spirit led me to the latter, and in 2007 I sourced my first Grenache fruit from the Santa Barbara Highlands Vineyard. Nestled high above the Pacific Ocean and 33 miles inland, this high-desert vineyard provided the perfect balance of heat and light I sought. I chose to name my label after two of my favourite things: my Grandmother Grace, and my most beloved attribute. Initially, it was a simple paycheck, but it soon grew into a passion and now, nearly two decades later, it has become my life's pursuit. Through my journey I have made Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir, Syrah, as well as numerous other varieties from some of the best vineyards throughout California's Central Coast. The sites that excite me have been the coldest ones, lending to wines of lighter weight, nuanced flavors, and bracing acidity. Riesling is the ultimate grape to pursue these characteristics. No other grape conveys its region's character and varietal flavor with the power, focus, and beauty the way Riesling does. I have been fortunate enough to work with one of the oldest cold-climate Riesling sites still left in California, Lafond Vineyard in the Santa Rita Hills. This site showed me that California's coastal regions are cool enough for this grape variety. After attending UC Davis, Adam worked as an enologist at Zaca Mesa winery in the mid-seventies, along with fellow Santa Barbara trailblazer, Jim Clendenen. The two winemakers went on to start Au Bon Climat, working together to create Santa Barbara’s earliest expressions of Burgundian Pinot Noir & Chardonnay. During this time, Adam bottled Ojai’s first vintage (at Au Bon Climat), while building the winery in the town of Oak View, just outside of Ojai where Adam’s grandfather had left some property. Initially, it was a simple paycheck, but it soon grew into a passion and now, nearly two decades later, it has become my life's pursuit. Through my journey I have made Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir, Syrah, as well as numerous other varieties from some of the best vineyards throughout California's Central Coast. The sites that excite me have been the coldest ones, lending to wines of lighter weight, nuanced flavors, and bracing acidity. Riesling is the ultimate grape to pursue these characteristics. No other grape conveys its region's character and varietal flavor with the power, focus, and beauty the way Riesling does. I have been fortunate enough to work with one of the oldest cold-climate Riesling sites still left in California, Lafond Vineyard in the Santa Rita Hills. This site showed me that California's coastal regions are cool enough for this grape variety.
